Been lookin 20 years now
roads all blending together
My old lady keeps texting
“You found him yet?”
“Keeping the coffee hot for you. :)”
No I ain’t found him yet
I text her back, not yet
Just keep seeing it
over and over again playing
back like an old VCR tape
my old man’s body out
in the corn bleeding out
his side like a dead lamb
Boy don’t forget that
seeing his daddy dead like that
Heard said he got in with the wrong folks
but daddy wasn’t no criminal
Was cousin Tom said
it was a cover-up for the Wilkins kid
Had a face like a dog in the night
Disappeared the day
we found my daddy out
in that field the sun beating
down on our faces like we deserved it
and we ain’t doubt Tom
‘cause of his gift, could
just sleep on something
and wake up with an answer
So I been looking ever since
Furthest I been out is California
‘round Fresno
Heard he had some
kids there with a Mexican
woman and disappeared again
talking about never having seen
no ocean but what’s an ocean
when you seen the blood
come out of a man’s stomach?
My last night there was hot
all my clothes was sticking
to me but I wasn’t sleeping naked
in no motel so I lay there
praying til a dream come to me
and
There was my daddy just
like I had last seen him
black pinstripe work shirt
eyes bluer than the sky
He said to me, boy,
it’s been so long
Heard said the water in
San Diego is somethin else
